Prescription drugs commonly used for treatment of automobile accident injuries - Dallas, Texas (TX)

Prescription drugs commonly used for treatment of automobile accident injuries

The three main classes of prescription drugs that doctors prescribe for the treatment of soft-tissue injuries from automobile accidents include:

  1. Anti-inflammatory

  2. Muscle Relaxants

  3. Pain Relievers

Anti-Inflammatory

Anti-Inflammatory or Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly prescribed for soft-tissue injuries because these conditions are thought to be inflammatory in nature.  However, inflammation is necessary in the healing process and by taking these drugs you can delay healing.  NSAIDs are known to have serious gastrointestinal toxicity (including liver failure) and other side effects. They are the second leading cause of stomach ulcers.  Clinical studies do not prove that they help heal muscle injuries.  Even over the counter acetaminophen is not a safe alternative as it can cause liver disease and aspirin can cause stomach bleeding.  Aspirin is known to interfere with the action of the platelets (blood cells involved in clotting). As a result, some people who take a lot of aspirin experience easy bruising of the skin. Therefore, people who have major bleeding problems should not take aspirin. Some studies have linked 458 deaths from acute liver failure to acetaminophen overdoses.  This overdose, also called acetaminophen poisoning is implicated in about half of all liver failures in the United States.  Acetaminophen itself causes nearly 100 Americans to die every year due to overdose and sends around 56,000 people to the emergency room each year.  Acetaminophen is also one of the most commonly reported substances to poison control centers all over the country because of overdoses.  4g = 8 tablets of 500mg each is enough to cause serious liver damage. 20 tablets can lead to liver failure and possibly even death.

Muscle Relaxants

Doctors and pharmacists agree that there are certain activities that should not be performed while taking Muscle Relaxants. This includes operating an automobile, all terrain vehicle, boat, and work equipment. This is due to the fact that many individuals become drowsy when taking this medicine. Dizziness and lack of coordination may also occur when consuming this type of prescription. If you engage in activities where you are responsible for operating an automobile or similar type of vehicle you stand a chance of becoming injured, hurting those around you, and causing damage to various forms of property.  This type of drug fools you into thinking you are not injured and you may engage in activity that you normally would not if you felt pain, thereby increasing your changes of exacerbating your injuries.  These drugs will make it difficult to function during the work day.

Pain Relievers

Addiction is the #1 concern if the drug is in the hydrocodone class, a synthetic codeine. The one most prescribed by doctors is in combination with Acetaminophen (See Anti-Inflammatory above). The effectiveness of this drug diminishes and most people need to take more than prescribed which leads to addiction and to liver disease due to the Acetaminophen in it.  While on these type drugs, your reaction time can be slowed and it is dangerous to operate automobiles or other equipment. Keep aware that most pain relievers do not heal the problem, most bind to pain receptors in the brain so you are not actively aware of such pain and gives you a false sensation that you are not injured, leading to more activity that can increase your injuries or cause legal consequences, such as settling your case early and for less because you feel you are no longer injured.

WARNING: Do your own internet research concerning any drug prescribed before you consume it.  There are more natural alternatives that are not toxic, more effective and don’t have side effects.  A drug-free approach to healing is always a wise healthcare choice!
